Mohs

Mohs micrographic surgery is a highly specialized form of skin cancer surgery. It is considered the most effective procedure for treating many types of skin cancer, including basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs). The Mohs surgery procedure is performed in stages by a fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon under local anesthesia, starting with surgical removal of the skin cancer. This tissue specimen is processed into a slide by a histotechnician, which is then interpreted under the microscope by the Mohs surgeon. If all of the margins are free of cancerous cells, the tumor has been cleared. However, if there is skin cancer remaining, the location of the cancerous cells are carefully mapped and the process is continued layer by layer until all of the skin cancer has been removed.

Patients benefit from Mohs surgery because it allows for the same day removal of the skin cancer with the highest cure rate, while sparing the maximum amount of healthy tissue. This allows the Mohs surgeon to confidently reconstruct the resulting defect with advanced surgical techniques to ensure the best possible cosmetic outcome and scar.

Dr. Husain is an experienced board-certified Mohs micrographic surgeon and has performed thousands of Mohs surgery procedures and reconstructions. He is passionate about curing skin cancer and performing reconstruction with the best aesthetic results.
